From what I know, it's currently metals like aluminum that are the only product in which you can save energy by recylcing because mining the materials then converting them into usable items is more difficult. Also, you conserve resources by recycling them, and although we can artificially create a portion of these metals, it would be more costly.

As for paper, it would be unwise to say you're saving trees by recycling those. Paper products nowadays come from tree farms, or trees specifically grown for our use. If you want to look at the humorous side of this, by choosing to recycle that newpaper you will be inhibiting the growth of trees. Why? Because if you lack the demand for a paper product, then less trees will be produced. And like DG said, converting old paper into something usable is a bitch. Not only are hazardous byproducts/pollutants made in the process, but also it takes more money and more energy.

Anyways, I would suggest looking into both sides of this issue if you're interested. However, you might find, like how I found, that a lot of them are ****ing hypocrites who run in circles with the same ****ing arguments. When each system is modernized, a majority of the respective opponents' logic is completely shot down. Or simply put, each side mainly argues against only the outdated version of recycling or landfills. They refuse to regard facts like landfills built nowadays are environmentally friendly or that recycling can easily be a lot more efficient than what it is now. Just try to pick out the solid reasoning and ignore the crap. Also, it wouldn't hurt to see the state of your district's recycling program and the nearest landfill.

For a fun viewing pleasure, watch Penn & Teller's Bullshit! episode on this. While it is flawed like everything else, they at least do something which most other anti-recyclers fail to do, and that is to make themselves heard well. And go visit some former landfill sites if you ever get the chance. I actually saw a couple large-scale gardens and a golf course which were transformed from a landfill and these landfills were built on barren hills.
